How To: Root the HTC Hero

HTC Hero
Intro
I’ve had a lot of requests from users asking how to root their HTC Hero. To be honest there’s been too many instructions flying around on the Internet (all different) and generally only working with one type of phone.
Today I came across a topic on XDA-Developers which goes through the complete procedure with you.
Preparation
1) Backup everything on your phone. Try an app like MyBackupPro or Sprite Backup
2) Backup again. Use a different app, or the same app to create another backup just in case
3) Backup SMS’s. Use SMS Backup/Restore app to save all your SMS to an XML file
4) Sync on Google. I don’t use Google Sync, but those that do you can make sure everything is saved on your GMail account
Why so much emphasis on backing up you ask? Well, basically by rooting you’re going to wipe everything on your phone. Everything on the SDcard will be preserved though.
Root!
Once you’ve got everything backed up proceed to the tutorial
The benefit of it being on XDA-Developers is that forum is full of EXCELLENT developers, and if you post any issues you’re having there you’ll get far better support than I could provide you with. At least I’m honest eh?
PS: Sorry that it’s been a little quiet on here, but I promise there willl be far more updates and from now on!

I own an htc hero. It was preloaded with Android 1.5 (Cupcake). Occasionally I received 2 OTA (Over the Air) updates from htc. The first one made no significant improvement; no damage either! I have to say something about the second one. It was Eclair (Android 2.1) with some improvements here and there. But my bluetooth headset and htc sync died instantly. Contacting htc helpline was a nightmare.
Finally I rooted with Villain ROM 12. Now my bluetooth headset and sync are ok. Live wall papers, 3D photo gallery, sound search, app2sd are just a few benefits I gained.
Root or not? What do you choose from creeping and flying?!
I advise to root; but rules set:
Rule-0. Rooting is not for an average computer user.
Rule-1. Never do it in a hurry
Rule-2. Use google to choose a suitable ROM
Rule-3. Spend days reading comments from forums
Rule-4. Read guidelines several times, visualizing the steps.
Rule-5. Never do anything you do not understand.
Rule-6. Backup and goldcard are important
Rule-7. Phone battery level should be above 50% at beginning of rooting
Rule-8. Never disconnect battery in the middle of rooting
Rule-9. Wait indefinitely while restarting
Rule-10. Don’t blame anyone (including me) if you bricked your phone!
